AI Chatbot for Your Website: A Practical Guide That Actually Sells
How to add an AI chatbot to your website that answers in seconds, sounds human, captures leads and hands chats to your team. Setup, settings, mistakes to avoid.
A visitor lands on your product page at 11pm. They like what they see, but they have one question: "Do you ship to Spain?" Your contact form says you reply within 24 hours. They close the tab and buy somewhere else.
That is the gap an AI chatbot for your website closes. Not a pop-up that shouts "Hi!" at everyone, and not a menu of buttons that never answers the real question. A chat that reads your actual prices and policies, answers in seconds, and gets out of the way when a person should take over.
This guide covers what a good website chatbot does, how to set one up in an afternoon, the settings that matter, and the mistakes that make visitors close the chat.
What a website AI chatbot should do
Most website chat tools fall into two camps. Live chat needs a person online all day. Old-style chatbots follow scripted flows and fall apart the moment someone types a question in their own words.
An AI chatbot built for selling does four things well:
- Answers from your knowledge. Prices, stock, delivery times, refund rules and opening hours, taken from what you wrote, not invented.
- Replies at a human pace. Fast, but not instant. A short pause with a typing indicator feels like a helpful person, not a machine.
- Captures the lead. Name, email or phone, saved with the conversation, so a visitor who leaves can still become a customer.
- Hands over cleanly. When someone is angry, wants a refund or is about to place a big order, the chat goes to your team with the full history.
In Replyvoo this is the same Closer that already answers on Telegram, now sitting on your site as a chat bubble. If you want the overview first, read the AI chatbot for website page.
Why speed on your website matters
Website visitors are even less patient than people in a messaging app. In a chat app they at least expect a reply later. On a website, if nobody answers, they leave and you never learn who they were.
Three moments matter most:
- On the product page, when the visitor has a doubt about size, ingredients, compatibility or delivery.
- On the pricing page, when they are comparing you with someone else.
- At checkout, when one small question ("Can I pay by bank transfer?") decides whether they finish.
An answer in a few seconds keeps them on the page. A good answer moves them to the next step.
Step 1: Teach your Closer before you design anything
The chat is only as good as what it knows. Before you touch colours, write the knowledge your Closer will answer from:
- Your products or services with prices
- Delivery areas, times and costs
- Payment methods and your payment link
- Returns, refunds and guarantees
- Opening hours and how to reach a person
Write one fact per line and use the words your customers use. "We ship to Spain, France and Germany in 2 to 4 days" works better than "EU logistics available". Our guide on writing a knowledge base your Closer can use goes deeper.
Step 2: Design the chat so it looks like your brand
In Widget Studio you start from one of six looks (Replyvoo Gold, Midnight, Clean White, Soft Pastel, Bold Ink and Glass) and then adjust:
- Colours for the button, header, bubbles and text
- Logo in the header, or your Closer's photo or initials
- Launcher style: a round bubble, a pill with text like "Ask us anything", or an avatar
- Position, size and corner roundness, so it fits your layout
- Dark mode: always light, always dark, or following the visitor's device
The live preview shows the chat on a sample page on desktop and phone as you change things. On phones the chat opens full screen, which is what visitors expect.
A practical tip: match the main colour to your "Add to cart" or "Book now" button. The chat should feel like part of your site, not a third-party sticker.
Step 3: Write texts that start conversations
Three short texts do most of the work:
- Welcome message. One line that says who you are and what you can help with. "Hi! I'm Ace from Glow Labs. Ask me about serums, prices or shipping."
- Quick replies. Up to four tap-to-ask questions. Use the questions you get most often, like "Do you ship to my country?" or "Which plan is right for me?"
- Proactive greeting. A small bubble above the launcher after a few seconds. Keep it useful, not pushy: "Free shipping over $50 this week. Any questions?" You can limit it to certain pages, like product pages only.
Keep the "AI assistant" label switched on. Telling people they are talking to an AI builds trust, and the EU AI Act asks businesses to be transparent about it. Visitors also see that a person can join at any time.
Step 4: Set the human feel
Instant replies feel robotic. Replies that take too long feel broken. Widget Studio lets you set a shortest and longest reply delay (for example 1.5 to 4 seconds) and switch on "type like a human", so longer answers take a little longer, with typing dots the whole time.
The reply never waits longer than your maximum, and your visitor never waits for the AI and the delay on top of each other.
Step 5: Capture the lead at the right moment
You can ask for contact details:
- After the first reply. Best for most stores. The visitor gets value first, then you ask "Where can we reach you?"
- Before the chat. Best for high-value services like real estate, B2B or clinics, where you always want to follow up.
Ask only for what you will use. Email alone converts better than name, email and phone. Every lead lands in Replyvoo's Leads list with its HeatScore, and the chat appears in Pulse Inbox next to your Telegram conversations, including the page the visitor was on.
Step 6: Install it with one line of code
Add your website's domain (for example shop.example.com, or *.example.com for every subdomain), copy the script tag and paste it before the closing body tag:
- WordPress: use a header and footer code plugin, or your theme's custom code box
- Shopify: Online Store, Themes, Edit code, then layout/theme.liquid
- Wix: Settings, Custom code, Body - end, all pages
- Webflow: Site settings, Custom code, Footer code
- Google Tag Manager: a Custom HTML tag on All Pages
Then open your site and press "Check installation" in Widget Studio. It tells you where the chat was seen and when.
The chat only loads on domains you allowed, runs in its own Shadow DOM so your theme can't break it, and loads after your page so it doesn't slow anything down.
Step 7: Jump in when it matters
AI should handle the repeat questions. Your team should handle the moments that need judgement. When a chat needs a person, it shows up in Pulse Inbox. Tap "Take over", type your reply, and it appears in the visitor's chat bubble within seconds. When you're done, hand it back to the Closer.
You can also set business hours. Outside them, the AI still answers, and visitors who ask for a person see your "we're offline, we'll reply here" message instead of waiting in silence.
Mistakes that make visitors close the chat
- An empty knowledge base. The AI can only say "let me check with the team". Write the basics first.
- A greeting on every page after one second. Wait a few seconds and target the pages where people hesitate.
- Asking for a phone number before saying hello. Unless you sell high-ticket services, give value first.
- Hiding that it's AI. People find out, and trust drops. Be upfront.
- Nobody watching the inbox. Handoffs need a human. Turn on handoff alerts so you know when someone is waiting.
What it costs
Website chat is billed like every other Replyvoo channel: per conversation, not per message. It's included on Pro and higher plans, and you can add it to any plan as the Website chat power-up. See pricing for the current plans.
The short version
Write what your Closer should know, pick a look that matches your brand, set a natural reply pace, ask for an email after the first answer, paste one line of code and keep an eye on Pulse Inbox. Your website starts answering like your best salesperson, in seconds, at any hour.
