Instagram DM Automation: Auto-Reply DMs, Stories & Comments

How Instagram DM automation works: auto-replies, story replies, comment-to-DM, the 24-hour window, Meta's rules and how AI turns DMs into sales.

A reel takes off. Your DMs fill up with "price?", "link?", "do you ship to Nairobi?" and story replies full of heart-eye emojis. By the time you get through them, half of those people have scrolled on.

Instagram DM automation fixes that gap between interest and answer. This guide covers what you can automate on Instagram, the rules Meta sets, and how an AI agent turns DMs into bookings and orders. Replyvoo's Instagram DM automation is coming soon; the principles here apply to any tool you use.

What you can automate on Instagram

Instagram gives businesses an official messaging API. Through it, approved software can handle four kinds of conversation.

1. Direct messages

The obvious one. Someone sends you a DM and the automation replies. Simple tools reply with a fixed message. An AI agent reads the question and answers it: price, sizes, availability, delivery, booking slots.

2. Story replies and mentions

When someone replies to your story or mentions you in theirs, it arrives in your DMs. These are warm leads: they've just seen something they like. A good agent knows the message is a story reply and answers in context ("That's our Soft Volume set, $65...").

3. Comment-to-DM

You've seen it: "Comment PRICE and I'll send you the details." When someone comments the keyword, the automation sends them a private reply in their DMs.

Meta allows a business to send one private reply to a comment, within a limited time after the comment was posted (seven days under Meta's current rules). If the person replies to that DM, a normal conversation starts and the usual messaging rules apply.

Comment-to-DM is powerful because it moves a public, one-line comment into a private conversation where you can actually sell.

4. Ice breakers and quick questions

You can set up suggested questions people see when they open a chat with you for the first time, such as "What are your prices?" or "Do you deliver?". They lower the effort of starting a conversation.

The rules: what Meta allows

Instagram automation only works safely through Meta's official API, and that API comes with rules.

You need a professional account. Business or Creator. Personal accounts can't use the messaging API.

You must allow access to messages. In Instagram's settings for messages, there's an option for connected tools. It has to be on for any app to read and reply to your DMs.

The 24-hour window. Automated replies are allowed for 24 hours after the customer's last message. Every new message from them reopens the window.

Human agents get longer. Meta's human-agent tag lets a real person reply up to seven days after the customer's last message. It's for humans only: using it to send automated or AI replies breaks the rules.

No unsolicited promotions. You can't DM people who never contacted you, and you can't use Instagram DMs as a broadcast list for offers. Instagram is a reply channel.

Apps need review. Software that manages messages for other businesses must pass Meta's App Review. That's one reason legitimate tools take time to launch on Instagram, and why Replyvoo's Instagram channel shows as coming soon rather than live.

Unofficial tools put your account at risk. Anything that logs in as you, scrapes your inbox or automates the app itself can get your account restricted. Use only tools built on the official API.

Why AI beats keyword auto-replies

Most Instagram automation today is keyword-based: if the message contains "price", send the price list. It works for one question. It falls apart when the customer writes like a human:

"Hi! Is this available in a smaller size and could it get to Mombasa before Friday?"

A keyword bot sees "size" and sends the size chart. An AI agent answers both questions, checks your delivery rules and asks whether they want to order.

AI also handles the follow-up. "Ok how do I pay?" doesn't contain your keywords, but it's the most important message in the chat.

A good Instagram DM flow, step by step

Here's how a lash studio might set it up (example only):

  1. A reel goes out with "Comment LASH for prices and free slots."
  2. Someone comments LASH. The AI sends a private reply: "Hi! Our sets start at $45. Want to see this week's free slots?"
  3. They reply "yes, Friday?" Now it's a normal DM conversation inside the 24-hour window.
  4. The AI shares Friday's open slots and a booking link with a deposit.
  5. They book. The AI confirms what to expect and when.
  6. A question the AI can't answer ("can you do lashes for my wedding party of 8?") goes to a person in the shared inbox with the whole chat attached.

Nobody waited. Nobody had to repeat themselves. The owner only stepped in for the one conversation that needed her.

What to prepare before you automate

  • Your top questions and answers. Prices, services, sizes, shipping or service areas, booking rules, deposits and cancellations.
  • Your links. Shop, checkout, booking page, payment links.
  • Comment keywords for your posts and reels, and what each one should send.
  • Your tone. Emojis or not? First names? Formal or friendly? Write two or three example replies so the AI can match your voice.
  • Handoff rules. Complaints, collaborations, custom orders and anything sensitive should go to a person.
  • Opening hours for humans, so the AI can set expectations ("our team will reply first thing tomorrow").

Our guide to writing a knowledge base your Closer can use shows how to structure this so the AI answers accurately.

Measuring whether it's working

Track a few simple numbers for the first month:

  • First reply time. Should drop from hours to seconds.
  • Reply rate on comment-to-DM. How many commenters answer the private reply.
  • Conversations that reach a link. How many chats end with a booking, checkout or payment link sent.
  • Handoffs. How many chats needed a human, and why. Each reason is a gap in the knowledge base you can close.

Why speed matters so much is covered in our piece on speed to lead.

Common mistakes

  • Over-automating friends and partners. Limit the AI to new conversations, keywords or business hours if your DMs are a mix of personal and business.
  • Comment bait without a real answer. If "Comment PRICE" sends a vague message with no price, people feel tricked.
  • No human in the loop. People must always be able to reach a person.
  • Treating DMs as a broadcast channel. Unsolicited promotions break the rules and annoy customers.

Where Replyvoo fits

Replyvoo puts AI Closers on the chat apps your customers use. Closers are live on Telegram today. Instagram is coming soon through Meta's official Instagram messaging API; it depends on Meta's App Review, so we don't give dates.

Join the Instagram waitlist and we'll email you when it opens. Meanwhile you can build and train your Closer on Telegram and bring the same knowledge, tone and handoff rules to Instagram later. The same Closer can also cover your Facebook Page through the Messenger AI chatbot once that channel opens. See pricing: you pay per conversation, never per message.
